I have never built a robot but I have some limited technical abilities. I also have a platform to mount the components on. Can anyone offer this newbie some guidance?

That's a really complicated question. It really depends on what it is you want that robot to accomplish. Do you have any programming experience or do you know someone who can help you with that? Otherwise you will need to spend a whole lot of time on the internet looking for programming code to help you along your way. We can recommend some hardware but that's about it. We don't have the time or resources to help you complete your robot.
What kind of things do you need the robot to do for you? could you post a picture of the platform where you want to mount the components on?
