Cherokey 4WD Robot Kit Batteries Overheating - Problem with ON/OFF switch

Hi,

I ordered the Cherokey 4WD robot kit and constructed it according to the instructions. However when I attached the battery pack, I noticed that even if the ON/OFF switch is put to OFF position, the batteries are heating rapidly. I measured the incoming voltage from the AA batteries, and it is fine (over 7V). However when I attach the wires from the battery pack to the terminals near the ON/OFF switch (VCC/GND), the voltage drops to about 1V. I noticed that the ON/OFF switch starts to heat as well, so I guess that the switch is shorting to ground when it is in OFF position. When I put it to ON position, everything is working (LEDS are lit etc.). I even disconnected the motors and jumpers but the behavior is consistent. Needless to say, this is quite dangerous as the batteries could explode. Is this a problem with the board or a design fault?
