This would be his first venture into robotics, so I don't want anything excessively complicated, but something that he could build and program to move around, but can be expanded on to in the future.

I think maybe the MiniQ series is very well. They have several sketch to control them like avoidance, remote control, sing a song... You can download them from wiki directly.
For 2WD it has a xbee socket. Your child can remote control it by plugging xbee (WIFI/Bluetooth/Zigbee) module
For 4WD it looks like a small car it is very cool. Grey.CC
