Gravity: Non-contact Liquid Level Switch

We are trying to use this sensor (FIT0212) to measure the liquid level in a small plastic fluid well and are having problems where the sensor will detect in only one direction.
i.e when the well is filled it detects a change but when the well level is reduced to empty the sensor stays stuck as if the well is still filled and the only way to change it is to reset the Arduino.
Any help would be much apricated.
