DTMF Shield not detecting tones from landline phone

Is there a way to adjust the sensitivity on the DTMF shield?
If I play tones out of my computer (with cable connected from headphone port to shield input), it works fine. But having it hooked up to a land line phone, it doesn't detect anything. Hooking up the phone tap to speakers confirms that the tap is working, it's just not as loud as it when I play tones out of my computer.
Anyone have any ideas for what I can do to get this working?

2014-10-15 21:38:02 does it work during a phone call and the remote side do the key presses?
Perhaps the cell phone is not outputting the DTMF tones but instead a "ring tone"
with a microphone connected on board next to the landline phone, should also work. Make sure the sound is not getting outside interference. Silent background and good signal quality is a good idea, but perhaps an amplifier might help.
DTMF signals are two signal tones together. You could compare the signals if you record them, audacity is free software and you can view the wave length.
I think there are some variations, you can check the datasheet, but here is another comparison graph:

I mean the DTMF sound is louder when you talking to others on the phone.
Do you have an older phone?

Any suggestions for what I can do to get mine working? Or is it defective?

2014-10-11 01:47:27 Hi Keen,
It look like the sound of the keyboard is very light with the smart phone, I tested with Iphone, Galaxy S4, And Nokia WP8.1. All of these phones have very low volume. But when I make a phone call, the keyboard has been louder than usual.

With a headset, could you hear the DTMF sound when you dialing?
And I am a little curious about how do you connect landline phones with this module?

I've tried a smart phone with cable going from the headphones to the input of the shield, and no key works. I've also tried two different landline phones. The application I'm wanting to get work is from a landline, but it doesn't seem like any phone works. The only success I've had is by playing sounds through my computer with the volume turned up high, and even then not all the tones get detected.

2014-10-08 18:14:00 Hello Keen,
What is the sound of the dial pad? Some smart phone will have a different sound when you touch the number. Is there any difference when you press every key?
Or the volume of the system?
