DFPlayer issues

I recently wired up the DFPlayer using the diagram in the documentation. I ran the GetStarted sketch with Rx and Tx as 10 and 11. I set up the SD card correctly and named one file with 0001. Running the code gets a start-up error.  I switched the rx and tx wires and the speakers started making a few distorted noises. The pinout diagram has Rx as the second pin after VCC so the wires are reversed. I don't get any audio output. I only get a timeout exception after the speaker noise and then it says track 1 finished. I've seen a bunch of resources and haven't been able to find a problem anywhere. This diagram I made should be what works but the UART wires are reversed. I'm not sure what I did wrong.
