Module overheats when SD is inserted

Why does my DFPlayer draw 1.3W of power as soon as I put a card in it? All I have is 3V on VCC and a ground connection. I've had nothing but problems with these modules and I have no idea what could possibly be the issue. This is the 6th individual module and I'm about to completely scrap my project. 

This is the schematic that I'm working to build. I've had brief success when the device working as intended, but after a few minutes of testing, they all suddenly stopped and overheated. No shorting, that's certain. 

In the schematic, I'm only using these pins:

VCC: 3V

IO_1: coming from an inverted LED signal 

SP_1/SP_2: Earbud speaker 

GND: duh

What am I doing wrong?
