DFRobot DRI0039 won't power on LED from battery connector but will from 5v pin

Hello, I'm hoping you can point out what I'm doing wrong.

I'm trying to work on a project where I connect a Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32S3 to a DRI0039 Quad Motor Driver Shield.

I have a battery connected to the two power ports and the ESP32S3 to the 5v and ground.

I can see that there is 11v voltage going to the DRI0039 by testing the two pins on the underside of the chip that are connected to power but the light doesn't turn on the DRI0039 or the ESP32S3 .

Plugging the ESP32S3 into USB will light both devices up so I know the wiring is right (or based on my assumption of what right is).

I tested another DRI0039 to see if my unit was a dud but no dice on the second unit.

Does anybody have an idea what I'm doing wrong?

Please ignore above post, I'm a total newb and failed to understand how this shield was passing power through to the Arduino using those pins and that said pins would not serve the roll of both power in and power out.
