cannot connect to wifi shield

I have a wifi shield v1.3. I have read the tutorial and also the wiki page but still no success for me.
I cannot connect to the 192.168.1.254 to configure the shield. When I ping that IP I get destination host unreachable errors. Here is what I did:
1. connected wifi shield to my arduino uno
2. connected usb and power (I have tried 3 different adapters 9.2V 700mA, 9V 1A, 1.5-12V adjustable 700mA)
3. connected ethernet cable (Also tried 3 things: connecting to pc with a straight-thru cable, connected to a hub, connected to a AP with DHCP both off and on)
I am really annoyed not to be accomplishing such a simple step. I'd be really glad if you guys point me in the right direction.

I've ditched the adapter bricks and used an adjustable lab power supply. Everything is working now :) karayipada
