DFplayer Does Not Initialize Consistently

About 25% of the time, after applying power (~4.8V), a short gnd. pulse (push button) on pin IO2 does NOT play the next track. It stays playing track 1. Both GND pins are connected. All non-essential pins are left open (rx,tx dac adkey usb, busy, etc.) Should some of them be pulled to ground? Any other thoughts?
