Digital Servo Driver Shield v 1.0 dynamixel AX-12a position control problem

i am having trouble using the AX-12A servo and Digital Servo Driver Shield with an arduino uno to control the position of the servo.
as a few other topics here have mentioned the servo just spins indefinitely.
does anyone have any tips to correct this?
is there a more robust sample program that is better commented, and invokes all the capability of this servo? There seems to be quite a bit missing, but i would be happy if i could use this combination to just set the position of the servo...
