Can the sensor measure through opaque objects ??
If it's thin, Can you measure it even if it's translucent ??

Gravity: Capacitive Non-contact Liquid Level Sensor (3mm TR)(FIT0212) can be used to measure opaque objects, even it is translucent.
It is not a light sensor, so please feel free to use it.
