DFPlayer Pro setPlayMode Issues

I am trying to use the DFPlayer Pro in single file mode. I am using a esp32 and attaching a pro using UART. That all works. However, when I use the setPlayMode to SINGLE it stays in ALLCYCLE. I even bought a USB to TTL and attempted to change the playmode using the AT commands. No matter what I do, the playmode stays in ALLCYCLE. Please help!
