DFR0009 LCD backlight not turning on

I have the DFR0009 LCD connected to an Arduino Uno. Some days ago, when I used it the backlight turned on. Now, using the same exact code, the backlight does not turn on. Explicitly setting pin 10 high, as the documentation indicates, does not cause the backlight to turn on.
My impression is that the backlight LED is broken, which is disappointing on a new piece of hardware. Are there other options?
