micro:bit Circular RGB Expansion board

I recently purchased this unit. I am totally unable to get either Windows or OSX to recognize this device as a drive. I have tried various known correct USB cables with no luck. The on/off switch does illuminate the red led but zero response. Is there some kind of little trick here?
