DFplayer doesn't turn on

I just got a DFplayer module in the mail, tried setting it up with very basic wiring*, and it's not turning on. The onboard LED isn't even coming on; I tested the LED itself with a multimeter and it's functional, but the whole module is non-responsive. If you have any suggestions on how to get it working, that would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you 

*(3.3/5v to VCC, Gnd to GND, then drawing the IO pins down to ground to trigger them)
